Digimons
This post feels right as a bullet point list. If you’re in a hurry you can just pick one level of bullets to read 😊
- 🥚 A niche thing about me is that I collect Tamagotchi and virtual pets (vpets)
- Did you know that Tamagotchi is a portmanteau of たまご ”Tamago” (Egg), and “Watch”… “Tamagotch”. Egg Watch. And if you press B it does function as a timepiece.
- 🆕 Recently I snagged an original 1997 Digimon vpet on eBay for about £10 + postage
- In 2017 there was a 20th Anniversary reissue of the original Digimon pet, and you can get them (new) online for about £20, or get a vintage one for half the price! It’s a shame more people don’t know how easy it is to seek out the original…
- 👦 Digimon wasn’t (primarily) a response to Pokémon, it was actually “Bandai Tamagotchi For Boys”.
- Also little known is that Digimon is by Bandai, who are also the Tamagotchi people, and the Gundam/Gunpla people
- Tamagotchi, with it’s egg shape and cutesy characters, was thought to appeal more to girls
- Discerning boys obviously need violence and dinosaurs for a toy to be viable…
- (Well, Bandai have steered harder towards “Tamagotchi is for girls” with recent releases, where every character resembles a cupcake with a thirst for fine jewellery)
- So, essentially, they took the Tamagotchi software, changed some sprites and screen wording, and packaged it in something that looked mean and industrial instead of… an egg…
- Digimon still start life as an egg though
- What is up with toys where the shell of the toy is a facsimile of the thing represented inside the toy?? Helen once had a vpet dog in the shape of a dalmation… did the dalmation swallow a range of smaller, digital dogs?? smh

- 🎁 Anyway, I got Helen to give me this thing I bought myself for my recent birthday
- I can’t be the only one out here who buys themselves birthday presents because it’s hard to Get The Right Thing and you don’t want to put your partner through that
- Also I’m really good at forgetting stuff so it’s like a surprise
- My other birthday presents were pants, Star Wars socks, sustainable deodorant, chocolates, and a passport
- (Which was another thing I just received in the post and asked Helen to wrap up to make it more special. Also my new passport is the Brexit kind that’s blue-going-on-black and has more holograms of my own face than I ever dreamed of seeing in one place)
- Where do you open your birthday presents? Helen thinks you should open them in bed in the morning but I’m more of an “at the breakfast table” kind of guy.

- 👶 This is the first vpet I have run since Baby Griff was born, because, y’know, he’s an actual high-stakes being that requires my care
- You do not need to be a marriage genius to know that investing time in a pocket beeper is not going to go down well when there is an actual child around in need of your attention
- This is lately less critical with El Firstborn because he can now mostly walk around and play by himself and stay out of trouble unless there are rocks and dirt nearby that look like food
- Who am I kidding; they don’t need to look like food

- 👾 vpets tend to require peak attention in the first hour of life when they are “baby” stage. I had a quiet moment to start it today, and it’s a long weekend, and a quiet week next week, and this thing should live about 7 to 10 days, so it seems a good time to pull the tab.
- (to remove the bit of plastic that keeps the batteries apart. This makes it switch on)
- The eBay seller obligingly included batteries! (Don’t tell Royal Mail)

- 🗾 This Digimon is Japanese language, so I had to remind myself of some Japanese words in order to make sense of… everything
- I’ll do a post or wiki or article somewhere with the japanese text and translations because weirdly, I can’t find that online anywhere…
A yellow digimon appears
- 💛 My Digimon is yellow, which is a very on-brand colour for me, as some associate me with the yellow sports T-shirts I’ve gathered from thrift stores around the
globeUSA.- In bold imitation of the small girl that is the main character in Disney’s “Turning Red”, I tried accessorizing with it today… amongst friends…
- Appropriately, my friends made some delightful Sushi for us all to enjoy tonight, and I got to teach them the word “hashi” and the toast, “itadakimasu” which seemed to amuse and entertain
- They have really good chopsticks. v easy to use; I wonder where they’re from.

P.s. I will resume the Appwrite hackathon project and Tapestory stuff when my brain is in that space, at my own disgression, and perhaps.
P.p.s If you’re thinking, “weab! lame!” then ok man, I’m cool with myself; take a good look at where this normative criticism is coming from… learn to love yourself – you’re worth it
