Sometimes a month is just too full and by the end of it you’re too tired out by your new baby and your new job to write anything down. Welcome to the month-and-a-half notes 🎶
Ok, where are we at? I need a “previously, on this blog” for my own review. One sec.
The family
Yes, the baby, he’s a good baby. He’s doing great. He drinks his milk and he sleeps and most of the milk stays in. He’s had some very cute moments with brother and sister and it’s nice to see our family growing (mostly) harmoniously.
Fridays are a big deal here as we crack out the Friday playlist and bang some Aldi pizzas in the oven. I dance with the kids and we all love it, and it gave me a brief feeling today that there will come a time when I will look back on these memories and really miss it. 🌄😿🥄 But for now I love my dance sessions with these crazy Griffs.

Football
NFL season is here! Last year I had the “late bird” deal where you pay for just the postseason for like £30 instead of £170 (all figures approximate). This year I went to cancel the renewal on that, and tricked them into giving me the full season for 20% off! Take that DAZN!

I work at Dayshape now and it’s amazing.
As soon as I got the laptop I thought “this is the nicest laptop I’ve ever touched”. I looked it up, and wow. I can’t tell you how much RAM is in it because the AI bros will come and steal my chips.
Some rapid thoughts:

I have a great and lovely team, I feel (and I think it’s mutual) that I’m an easy fit and they are a super bunch to work with.

The onboarding and induction has been exceptional, with a proper structured three month plan, a buddy system, leaders who reached out to me to connect, and in-house training modules that cover everything you need to know in month 1.

Slack is good, isn’t it (maybe you think it’s bad - this is probably because you have never worked in a Teams-pilled org). They’re trying to make Slack the Work OS and it’s working. A fully slack-ified biz is quite a different feeling.

Rider. A lot of people here use Rider IDE, and I’m now one of them, though I found out later it’s not mandatory mandatory, some people use VS, it’s just the well-worn groove. Either way, if I’m growing my brain anyway, let’s go the whole hog and use alllll the new things.

Memes. Maybe this goes with being a Slack shop, or being basically still a startup, but there’s a silly fun culture the likes of which I’ve always wanted to be a part of. And everywhere I go I’ve tried to make it happen and 50% of the reaction feels like “stop trying to make silly fun happen”. There are a lot of in-jokes here (in a nice way): there’s a meeting pod called “Business Shorts”, a pantheon of Goose-related reactions in Slack, and I’m pretty sure I saw one of the senior leaders playing guitar (on mute) while he lurked on a demo call.
Everyone has cameras on all the time and they don’t have to be told, and it’s not threatening. There’s a uniform code but it doesn’t, for example, prohibit hoods, caps, or shorts (cf. Business Shorts). It’s like moving to a free country. Revelatory.
I’ve been taken aback a few times in the last few weeks, just thinking “Wow, this job is lovely, my career has been great, God’s been so good to us”. And that’s how it feels.
